the complete series of penny dreadful arrives on blu-ray featuring avc encoded 1080p high definition widescreen in 1.78.1 transfers, just as it was shown on tv when originally broadcast. there's not much to complain about here at all, the episodes all look great in high definition. some very mild aliasing can be spotted here and there but otherwise the image is strong, nicely detailed and quite colorful. sets and costumes look great and there's soli shadow detail here too, darker scenes thankfully don't break up into compression artifacts. skin tones, of which a lot are on display, look lifelike and there's plenty of texture to ogle and detail to appreciate both in the foreground and the background of pretty much every shot.
sound: the blu-ray set arrives with a lossless dts-hd 5.1 surround mix. each track offers plenty of presence to ogle, including two excellent backwards channel mixes that should please even the pickiest purists. the music is loud but well balanced, full sounding while always conveying the intended emotion. scores are easily heard in the mix, there's a great sense of front to back action. lfe is solid too, with enough depth and fullness to add impact and a general sense of scale to a mix that could otherwise easily sound narrow and claustrophobic. widescreen action effects remain snappy and energetic. in a good way. dialogue is generally strong, though at times when multiple speakers are telling other characters dialogue is similarly resourced in a way that makes it hard to hear every word in a crowded scene.
